Lore

A genuine slice of history, a celebration of alliance, a remembrance of victory.

While many pieces here are inspired by or recreations of swords in history, only this one (up until now) is a piece *OF* history.

The trollshop was granted the fine honour of recreating this historically significant memento of what some may call one of the greatest turning points in the European theatre of World War II.
Here stands the wooden reproduction of The Sword of Stalingrad, a gift from Great Britain to Russia in 1943, in celebration of her successful defense of the city of Stalingrad, a triumph immense in both strategic and symbolic value.

To compound on the honour of this rare privilege of a commission, its patron shared his heritage to the story of the sword itself, being a descendant of the silversmith and calligrapher who worked on the inscription of the original, from whom the patron inherited his name.
Such a story carries with it a tremendous gratification in being able to build with my hands a connection piece to one's lineage, bringing history to life in a very real way. What a gift it is to be given such trust to bring such an object of weight to life.

Thus all stops are pulled in this piece's execution, and in every facet it demands made with maximum effort, I obliged. This would be an altogether higher level of Trollkarl capability, that it may be a true heirloom piece, to be passed down through the generations that follow.

The inscriptions upon the blade are precisely carved by CNC in both English and Cyrillic, the English side reading: "To the steel-hearted citizens of Stalingrad - The gift of King George VI - In token of the homage of the British People"
The blade's bevels were planed by hand, that no risk of machine error may be allowed to mar the valuable space around the inscriptions.

The grip wrap at the hilt is wholly unlike anything else in the collections - no mere plain strap of leather, but instead a twisted suede cordage spun about the hilt. It carries with it an incredible effect of royal stature, and a tactile sensation of considerable presence in the hand. The wrap then seals at each end with a leather ring ferrule, accenting the effort.

The carefully hand shaped crossguard, carved and sanded as faithfully a recreation as capability allows, sits at the base of the blade with regality and prestige.
The prismatic pommel, demanding a steady hand at the belt sander, completes the hilt at its tail, symbol of the fully amalgamated intensity of labour.

And finally comes the scabbard, ceremonial in nature, dyed a deep Soviet crimson red, and ornamented with decorative layered gilding bands in a complementing hue of British Tan. These two colours represent both aesthetically and symbolically the collaboration of these two nations, reminiscent of the very sword itself, the spirit in which it was created, and the history it represents.
The scabbard is also adorned with the meticulously reproduced insignia painted upon the leather, each one first carefully imprinted onto the leather with purpose-made wooden stamps, imparting clear and precise lines within which the paints are drawn in.

The only divergent detail upon this artpiece as a whole is the Trollkross maker's mark, painted prominently in place of the royal cypher of King George VI, for obvious reason of both creditation for the work, but also in holding high regard for the immutable sanctity and authority of the original signature seal, not something to be reproduced frivolously.

All elements together, this piece represents a jewel of achievement for the trollshop, both in technical capacity as well as in the honour to have been asked to create such an item of significance.
