The Sparring Grade difference

An entire other level of wooden sword, achieved through three elements:

Choice of lumber

The construction begins with my toughest stock of impact tool timber.

Hours of research and years of experience pour into a body of knowledge and discernment as to the highest strength and wear-resistant lumber species and cuts. This creates the most stable foundation possible for the labour that follows.

Construction

Carefully sawn down the centerline, the lumber remains no longer a single plank, but instead is turned into a two-layer laminate, glued and pressed. Taking full advantage of modern glue's incredible strength, this method of introducing a disruption layer disallows cracks from developing or traveling across the grain, bolstering the blade's resilience and preventing shattering.

Edge hardening

You read that correctly. Hardening a wooden blade is essentially identical to hardening a martial artist's bones. It takes intentional impact, a little bit of pain, and repetition.

The method used here is with a rod of A2 tool steel, ground into the striking edge to compress the fibers uniformly. With each stroke, the fibers collapse and compress, caving in the tiny pores and vessels within the material. The result is like a layer of callous on well worn skin, or density in a Muay Thai fighter's shin. Hits leave less of a mark, by virtue of the fact its entire striking surface is already pre-marked.

All elements come together to create something beyond the typical, exceeding the standard.

This construction method grades the sword for use against other wooden swords in full speed combat. It is meant to see many years of sparring at absolute intensity.

A sword built to this specification becomes a multi-layer laminated blade - far, far stronger than a single piece of wood. Glued and pressed, this blade becomes truly mighty, and no longer falls under the term 'waster'.

Stresses become distributed, grain becomes reinforced. Each layer supports and stabilizes the entirety of the blade, and the immense strength of carpenter's glue hardens its tolerance for abuse.

This listing represents an upgrade to a sword, and not a whole sword on its own.

Pair with your order

Set upon any sword in the shop, this upgrade placed alongside it in your cart marks that piece to be made that extra bit more special.

Into its construction is poured every inch of its merited attention and intention to produce something exceptional.

What comes out of the other end is a tool of deliberate endeavour, an object truly made with love, to be owned with love.
