Breidr || Ash Planked Viking Round Shield

Immortal icon of the era of the Norsemen: the mighty round shield.

No effort is spared in this piece's construction, it is built for battle with every lesson learned & accumulated from ten years of reenactment fighting, and honours all the time-tested techniques used in the real shields of an aeon ago.

Ash is the favoured choice of timber for Breidr, mighty but light in weight. It is ripped into planks, interlocked with snug-fitting joinery, and glued tight. This creates the raw but stout core of the shield.

Weight is further reduced with an age authentic technique of planing out towards the edges, removing bulk where nimbleness is wisdom, while losing none of its strength. It is a detail not easily noticed, but we will know.

Powerful crossbracings then grip the planks and hold them true, while adding that immaculate inside detail, bolstering the structure, as well as the elegance true to origin.

Leather bound rims reinforce the edges, and only further solidify the hold. Painstakingly hand stitched with simulation sinew, tethered tight, and shrunken into tension, the hide acts as the fortress walls which contain the whole, further reinforcing the form from its weakest points, and acting as a barrier against splintering.

Finally, riveted nails fasten and seal all separate parts into one functioning synthesis, and locks them into place against hand cut square washers. The ancient method of heating the nail's end and peening it over not only holds, but clutches the assembly together, clenched in perpetual constriction, a constant state of readiness.

With a fine leather shoulder strap, the shield now becomes complete not merely an armament, but a companion.
