Drawing from a lifelong love of all things ancient,
these training tools are inspired by history
and handcrafted as functional art.

Each piece intersects in the study of wood, of leather,
of antiquity, and of martialcraft.

Hand selected materials

The journey from timber to treasure is a process begun long before the first cut is even made. Leather and lumber are personally and discerningly selected, that only the finest material crosses the workshop doors.

This work is born of a lifetime of study and genuine love for the craft.
Symmetry, balance, curve and contour - all the result of hours of refinement, and built with the intentionality of fine furniture.

From raw timber to finished piece, it is one of my pleasures to enhance the experience of a fresh build with periodic progress photo updates, as the metamorphosis develops and reveals the artpiece hidden beneath the rough.

Made with love, to be owned with love

Created with passion and precision,
these are fully functional and built-to-last training swords,
as well of works of timeless beauty and badassery.
...Or as I like to call them - fancy toys for grown ups.

Constructed true to the original craft of old:
A blade that continues into a full tang,
fit tight through crossguard and pommel,
and wrapped at the grip with supple deerskin leather.

These works are my homage to the ancient world to which
I have always felt connected - its cultures, its histories, its mythologies,
and to the artists and craftsmen who have come before me.
...But also to remind us of the feeling of holding something truly awesome.

I want you to adore these works. I want you to enjoy looking at them,
holding them, using them, and hanging them up.
They are built to look, feel, and perform exquisitely,
as loyal tools of training, and as treasured pieces in your collection.

May they add a warmth to your home, and find you in excellent company.

FAQs

Are these swords usable, or wallhangers?

Trollkarl swords are, as a standard, built for training.

After all, what is a wooden sword that you can't use? The idea is almost criminal.
These items all represent the desire to create training gear of both the utmost beauty and rigidity, serving faithfully for the long haul. Special attention is always put in the engineering of these pieces, making sure that there is always enough material where it counts, and that that material is as rigid as possible.

Are wooden swords legal?

By and large, yes.
In the overwhelming majority of the world, wooden swords are recognized as martial arts training equipment, and are generally legal to own and use. However, there may be regulations regarding their use in public spaces or during certain activities such as events, demonstrations, or outdoor training in & around the public.
It is always best to check local laws and regulations for the 100%.

Can you make ___?

Let's talk!

Custom commissions are a huge part of how Trollkarl Armory has grown over the years. This is a service I will continue to offer until the day I close my workshop doors.

How long does it take to build a sword?

This has been difficult to nail down over the years, as the process undergoes constant evolutions and refinements. Methods get reinvented, new tools get created, and streamlining improves with repetition.

There was a time, when this project was still in its infancy, where a single sword took up to 30 hours.
Today, I aim at around 10-15 builds per month.

Custom pieces are considerably more unpredictable, requiring special individual attention that is not always possible to batch, and thus very often require longer lead times.

How should I care for and maintain my wooden sword?

Trollkarl swords come fully finished with a dual coat of natural shellac, and require no upkeep or intermittent re-oiling.
To prolong their sheen and fine finish, however, it is advised to keep them away from excess moisture, clear from falling onto something rough that may scratch the surface, and storing them safely.

Additionally, you may wish to consider adding a Scabbard or Stand to give your sword an honoured home when not in use.
